High temperature and high pressure and chemical vapour deposition are same in real diamonds as well as in synthetic diamonds and the difference is viewed by a trained grader.
Understanding the 4Cs of the diamond
To purchase the best diamonds, you must need to have a sound knowledge of the 4Cs that determine the price and value of the diamonds. Even some of you might know the concept, still you must peep into the details for the real diamond value. The four Cs include clarity, color, weight and cut.
Diamond Carat Weight
Carat abbreviated as “ct”, diamonds are weighted in carats composed of 100 points. Half carat stone is 50 points. Special scales for diamonds are used to calibrate carat from thousand to hundredth of a carat. 1 gram is equal to 5 carats and this is a set standard. Value of the diamonds increases with the increase in weight of the diamond. It is the weight of the stone that described by carat. Prices of diamonds per carat vary from size to size and weight to weight and so 1 carat diamond is measured in around 6.5 mm.
Diamond Clarity
Diamond clarity is the measurement of size, type, position, contrast and number of the small imperfections occurring in almost all diamonds and do not affect the diamond’s beauty. Such technological imperfections are titled as diamond inclusions and blemishes. Inclusions and blemishes determine the quality of the diamond and various grading scales are used to describe diamond clarity. Performed with a 10 power microscope, grading a diamond depends on I1, I2, and I3 that can be seen by the naked eye.
The inclusions of the diamonds describe and enhances its value. The lesser the inclusions visible under 10 X magnification, the more valuable the diamonds are. The Diamonds are graded as per below table
· Flawless - F
· Internally Flawless - IF
· Very Very Slightly Included 1 - VVS1
· Very Very Slightly Included 2 - VVS2
· Very Slightly Included 1 - VS1
· Very Slightly Included 2 - VS2
· Slightly Included 1- SI1
· Slightly Included 2- SI2
· Included 1- I1
· Included 2- I2
· Included 3- I3
Diamond Cut
Diamond Cuts are the most essential characteristic and gives the overall beauty of diamond that determines the sparkling effect. When diamond is proportionately cut, then light is returned out of the top and if cut shallow then light goes out of the bottom and deep cut escapes out of the side. The main attraction lies within the fusion of rainbow colours of diamond and brilliance. Three basic styles of ideal cut diamonds are brilliant cut, mixed cut and step cut. The value of stone also varies according to accepted standards.
Diamond Colour
Diamond Colour or diamond fluorescence refers to the lack of colour and grading the whiteness of a diamond ranging from D (highest possible colour) to Z (lowest possible colour). Diamond colours are colourless, near colourless, faint yellow tint, very light yellow tint and tinted light yellow. Grading diamonds require non reflective white background. Fancy colour diamonds possess intense real colours with exceptional colour and are not graded. Fancy colours could be brown, yellow, purple, green, etc. Below is diamond color chart:
Colorless |
Color between D, E, and F diamonds can be detected only by a gemmologist in side by side comparisons, and rarely by the untrained eye. |
Near Colorless |
G-J diamonds are suitable for a platinum or white gold setting, which would normally betray any hint of color in a diamond. Because I-J diamonds tend to be a great value. |
Faint Color |
K diamonds color (usually a yellow tint) is more easily detected by the naked eye. These warm colored diamonds are set in yellow gold are an exceptional value. K diamond is often half the price of a G diamond due to its perceptible colour |
Very Light Color |
N-R diamond colors have an easily seen yellow or brown tint. |
Light Color |
S-Z diamonds have too much color for a white diamond. |
